DIY Pre-Holiday Checks
Lots of New Zealanders (including most of us here at Sutherland Performance) will be packing up the car and heading away to enjoy the summer break. If you are planning a trip, it’s a good idea to check the basics on your car for some peace of mind that you’ll make it to your destination without any hiccups.
Here are five quick and easy checks to make sure your car is road trip ready:
1- Tyre Pressures (Including the Spare!)
Proper tyre pressures ensure better fuel efficiency, improved handling, and reduced risk of a blowout. If you’ll be heading off loaded to the gunnels it pays to add some extra pressure, especially in the rears. The recommended pressures inside your fuel flap or drivers door jamb will usually include different pressures for fully loaded vs regular weight. Don’t forget to check the spare tyre too – it’s a big paper weight to be carrying around if it’s not in usable condition and inflated to the correct pressure (usually 60PSI for a space saver).
2- Clean Windscreen Inside and Out – Top Up Washer Fluid
A clean windscreen is vital for visibility, especially when the sun hits it at the wrong angle. Give it a good clean inside and out, you’ll be surprised how much gunk builds up – especially on the inside. Make sure your windscreen washer fluid is topped up and has a quality cleaner fluid added to deal with dust and bugs.
3- Oil Level and Water/Coolant
Check your oil level with the dipstick and make sure it’s between the minimum and maximum marks. Top up your coolant if it’s running low. While you’re at it, stick your head under the car for a quick look to ensure there are no obvious leaks.
4- Tyre Tread and Condition
Your tyres are your car’s only point of contact with the road, so make sure they’re in good shape. Look for even wear, cracks, or damage. Tyres are ready to be replaced when they hit the 2mm wear bars between the treads.
5- Lights and Indicators
Before hitting the road, check that all your lights and indicators are working properly. This includes headlights, brake lights, park lights, and indicators etc. Faulty lights can be dangerous and could land you with a ticket.
Taking a few minutes to run through these basic checks can save you a lot of hassle down the road. If you’re unsure about anything, give us a call or pop in and see us at Sutherland Performance – we’re always here to help keep you safe on the road.
